A Letter from NEALS President, Rebecca Peterson

Happy spring, everyone!!

I hope that everyone's respective breaks were relaxing, and that the spring is off to a great start!

For NEALS, spring certainly means new beginnings and opportunities, especially when it comes to our spring meeting. Due to an unforseen complication in the life of our original presenter, we have decided to make a change to our programming for the spring. "Now What?: Supporting Students with Learning Disabilities through the Admissions Process and Beyond" will be offered instead in fall 2008 ... stay tuned for more information!

Our new spring meeting will be on the topic of "Special Education Law and Independent Schools," and we will be meeting at Landmark College in Putney, Vermont on Friday May 16th (please note the date change!), with registration beginning at 9 AM and the conference concluding for the day at 3 PM. Cost for the meeting will be $25 for members, and $40 for non-members; coffee and snacks will be available in the morning, and lunch will be served.

Our keynote presenter is Alicia Brandon, former chair of the Education Department at Landmark College and current project manager with Landmark's Institute for Research and Training. Her presentation will focus on an overview of the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 specifically as they apply (and do not apply) to independent schools. She will be facilitating discussion and providing case study analysis designed to assist learning specialists in navigating the tricky waters of disability law and independent schools. We encourage you to invite any colleagues who might benefit from this information as well - admissions folks, academic deans, etc. Following the keynote presentation and discussion will be an hourlong business meeting. The focus will be on planning for our fall conference, and starting the conversation about our 10th anniversary meeting in the spring of 2009. All members are welcome to stay and participate!

We ask that you RSVP to our program director, Gretchen Larkin, at

508-485-0100 or [ mailto:glarkin@fayschool.org ]glarkin@fayschool.org by

May 1st so that we can have an accurate count of attendees ... you are welcome to either pay at the door or make arrangements to send payment to Gretchen in advance.

Looking forward to seeing you all in May!

Best,

Rebecca
